YGO/SG-1 FIC: The Shadow at Your Door Part 4 of ?

The Shadow at Your Door
A Yu-gi-oh!/Stargate SG-1 fanfiction story
By not_hathor aka Mother Chow Goddess

Rating/Warning: 'OT' for swearing, suggestive language, and male/male relationships (Shonen-Ai, yaoi, SKxRB). Character deaths mentioned, but not shown. Spoilers for the end of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series and for StarGate SG-1 season 7.

Disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh! Or any of the characters thereof. They belong to Kazuki Takahashi/ Shueisha Inc., FUNImation Productions, 4Kids, etc. Likewise, I do not own Stargate: SG1 or any of those characters. They belong to MGM, Double Top Secret Productions, Gekko, the SciFi Channel and a whole bunch of suits. This piece of fiction was written solely for the enjoyment of myself and fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! and StarGate fans , and no profit is being made by its writing or publication.

The song 'Shadows' was written, performed & produced by Canadian folk singer Gordon Lightfoot; the lyrics of the second verse have been altered slightly to better fit the characters and the plot.

2nd Warning: This is a 'song-fic', a 'band fic' (sort of) and a Cross-Over (sort-of) set in an AU in which the anime/manga series Yu-Gi-Oh! and the live action TV series 'StarGate:SG-1' share the same reality. If any of these are immediate turn-offs for you, please feel free to stop reading NOW. The original version of this story that was posted on FanFiction.net did NOT include a Lemon scene between Seto and Ryou. It will be clearly marked (hidden in a Cut) so that sensitive readers can avoid it if they wish. Although it uses some of the ideas from my 'Weight of a Feather' stories, I don't think it's necessary to have read them to appreciate this one. Thank you.

Author's Note: Six improbable things you will need to know to better understand this story: 1) It is definitely Shonen-Ai & yaoi,). 2) It is definitely AU, set after end of the Yugioh manga/anime series, and between the episode "Heroes" and the season finale of SG-1's season Seven. 3) It is commonly believed in the context of this fanfic that the Spirit of the Sennen Ring, aka Yami Bakura, aka the Tomb Robber, no longer exists although Ryou retains certain characteristics & attitudes (especially when he loses his temper); ditto for Marik/Malik. 4) Several of the supporting characters were 'borrowed' from other anime/fandoms -- see later A/N for ID's. 5) For the main story, the following ages apply: Seto is 25 - Ryou is 24 - Mokuba is 19 and in college. 6) It's my presumption that frequent use of or exposure to the Sennen Items results in an increased sensitivity to the presence of magic and limited access to any lingering residue of mystical energies.

"Sennen," Seto snorted. "Give me a break."

He started toward the door with the full intent of dropping the offending pieces of cardboard in the circular file and giving his personnel administrative assistant three minutes to explain why he shouldn't dock her pay and/or fire her incompetent self when his course was intercepted by a blur of wild black hair and leather fringe that snatched the tickets out of his hand and perched on the edge of Kaiba's desk.

"Wicked!" exclaimed Mokuba. "Do you know what these are, Big Bro'?"

"Some idiotic flash-in-the-pan punk band looking for a corporate sponsor and trying to capitalize on Kaiba Corp.'s past association with," Seto grimaced, "that sort of New Age mystic mumbo jumbo?"

"Guaranteed chick magnets!" the younger Kaiba crowed enthusiastically. "Honestly, Seto, where have you been for the past year? Sennen is only the absolutely hottest group of the season; their concerts sell out way in advance! Last month when they canceled a week in Sydney, the opera house had to practically call out the riot squad!"

"Hn." The tall brunette studied his brother with a sardonic eye. Mokuba himself could be considered a 'chick magnet' these days, even without the added attraction of extreme wealth or 'hot' concert tickets. The younger boy had finally gotten his growth spurt in high school and now came close to his own six-feet plus, but still possessed that unruly mop of hair and the wide gray eyes that drove women of all ages to coo and/or drool over the younger Kaiba in almost sickening numbers. Mokuba, of course, took full advantage of the situation, enhancing the irresistible 'waif' look with baggy clothes and the currently fashionable leather fringe and studs. "I take you have a use for those, then?"

"Oh yeah!" Studying the tickets carefully, the boy gave out a whistle. "Back Stage passes, too. Confess, Nii-san! Who did you blackmail to get these?"

"Nobody," Seto growled irritably. His brother shot him a 'yeah, right' look. "So, tell me about this 'hottest group of the season'. If I'm going to let you borrow the corporate helicopter for a trip to Tokyo this weekend with your current squeeze to attend this concert, I think I should know a little about what kind of 'rave' you're getting into."

"We need to upgrade your vocab, bro'. 'Squeeze' and 'rave' are so last millennium." Swinging one foot back and forth, the other youth considered. "They do a lot of classic rock covers, and some theatre stuff… y'know, like Andrew Lloyd Weber? But also some really good original stuff; a lot of their songs seem to be based on Duel Monsters, so they're really popular with Duelists." Noticing his brother's grimace, he added quickly, "And the girls really go for them. You should see some of the chats…. Well, maybe you shouldn't, might scar you for life or something!" He grinned cheekily and Seto rewarded him with a slight smile and ruffled his hair.

"Go ahead then. But I want a full report afterwards….on second thought, you can omit the make-out sessions with --Kari, is it this week?-- in the chopper and the limo and the box seats and the ----"

"Nii-sama!"

Please take me gently, lover,
Where the river runs away
From the desert in the springtime
On a blue and windy day;

Seto was working in the mansion library very early Sunday morning (2 a.m. - and no, he was not waiting up for his brother or anything like that!) when he heard the sound of familiar footsteps in the hall. They slowed, hesitated near the entry; then the door opened slowly and Mokuba shuffled in.

"Hey, bro’."

Hn, not exactly the most enthusiastic greeting. Mokuba looked tired; not surprising, considering the hour, but…. "How was your date?"

"A bomb."

"Bomb as in 'incredibly fantastic' or as in 'total disaster'?" Judging from his body posture Seto was willing to bet the latter, and that his little brother wasn't really keen on revealing the details. "What happened to the 'guaranteed chick magnets'?"

Mokuka threw himself into an overstuffed armchair and stared fixedly at the ceiling. "Oh, they worked great," he groused. "Suki just couldn't shut up about how absolutely wonderful they were; do you have any idea how disgusting it is to hear your girlfriend go on and on about five gorgeous, sexy, sensitive, and romantic guys who aren't you….stop laughing, Seto!"

The elder Kaiba stifled a snicker.

"And how incredibly thoughtful… apparently," the irate youth spat out, "those concerts in Sydney that were cancelled? Death in the family…. 'so tragic'," he mimicked in a falsetto voice clearly intended to represent the air-headed Suki. "Gaaaah!" Mokuba sat up suddenly and aimed a glare at his brother.

"You are laughing,' he accused. "Bet you wouldn't think it was so funny if you knew…." He broke off suddenly and resumed his intense study of the ceiling murals. "The music was good", he offered after a moment, glancing quickly in Seto's direction then subsiding again into introspection.

Brooding about the shallowness of the feminine gender, no doubt, Kaiba major surmised. "I take you skipped the back stage tour then."

"Hell, yes! Like I was gonna stand there and watch my date rip the shirt off Ry-- Ryan's back…" Something in his brother's tone caught Seto's attention.

"What?"

Shifty eyes again. "Ryan Nash. Second guitar. Looks a bit like what's'is name from RiverDance, that Flatley guy. Suki's positively gaga about him."

Intriguing. Mokuba trying to be evasive was like a high school band trying to play Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture -- good effort but ultimately doomed to failure. Something was up, and Mokuba didn't want him to know about it. And considering little brother's previous enthusiasm regarding this Sennen, he was guessing it had more to do with the band than with the fickleness of one member of the literal harem of girls he'd acquired in the last year or so.

"Then I imagine you have no further use for these," he suggested, holding the bundle of admission tickets for next week's Sennen concert in Kyoto which had arrived in the mail that morning dangerously close to the paper shredder. In a flash Mokuba was out of his chair and once again snatching the prized cardboard slips away from disaster.

"Nuh-uh, Big Bro. I just have to pick my date a little more carefully next time, that's all." The sunny grin on the younger boy's face was just a shade too bright for total sincerity. "Night, Seto. Don't stay up too late."

"Night, Moku'." After the other had left, Seto sat absently tapping one finger against the lid of his laptop. Should he tackle his brother again in the morning -- later in the day? he corrected himself. Or start a cyber search right now on this musical phenomenon? A golden gleam caught his eye; a CD case protruding from the pocket of Mokuba's jacket, which he'd left carelessly on the chair. Further investigation revealed a home-burned copy of a Sennen recording; a gift intended for, or from the shallow Suki? Heading back to his desk the brunette popped the disc into the audio system while he studied the scribbled play list on the back. From Suki, he decided; his brother's handwriting was much better than that. Mokuba was right; this group did seem partial to oldies and musical theatre….

And suddenly Seto Kaiba was very glad he was alone in the library at 2 a.m., as a voice from the past flowed out of the speakers and drove spikes of grief and pain through what was left of his heart.

When there's beauty all around
As the shades of night grow deep,
As the morning stars grow dim
They will find us in the shadows fast asleep.

On Monday morning Kaiba handed Ms. Mihoshi an unexpected bonus in lieu of an apology and an assignment: anything and everything available regarding Sennen on his desk before the Kyoto concert. He and Mokuba managed to avoid each other without appearing to do so for the rest of the week; when the younger Kaiba returned from Kyoto he seemed troubled and kept sending Looks towards Seto when he thought the other wasn't paying attention. Domino City concert tickets arrived and Seto feigned polite disinterest as he once again handed them over, with a comment about how Mokuba's approval rating with his friends must be hitting a record high. Mokuba had squirmed a bit, then asked if Seto might not like to attend one concert; he'd declined, citing business meetings, then after the younger boy was gone he'd called the manager of the Domino City amphitheatre and made private arrangements.

By that time he knew as much, probably more, about the StarGate project and recent events than all but a few very highly placed individuals in the U.S. Government, not to mention having become an unrecognized authority on all things Sennen. He’d also looked at some of those chatrooms and nearly laughed himself sick at some of the comments made by unsuspecting fangirls. When the subject of the Domino concerts came up some spirit of mischief led him to sign in:

SenXpert: That’s what my Bro says, anyway.
DrmrChic: Who’s got a grlfrnd?
RyansGrrl: SenX, you local 2? Who you going with? Maybe we meet?
SenXpert: Only if you promise to try MK….. bro says he’s really a nice guy, nothing like SK…
RyansGrrl: Promise, SenX. C U there?
SenXpert : OK.
SenXpert has left the chatroom

Before signing off completely, Seto made sure that he knew exactly who RyansGrrl really was (it pays to be a master hacker… and to own the service provider, meh heh heh), and kept a surreptitious eye on his brother for the next few days. When Mokuba came home from school Thursday looking amused and bemused, the elder Kaiba smirked to himself, and made a few more phone calls. Friday afternoon, he waited in the student union parking lot for his brother (and new girlfriend) to emerge from the main building, tossed Mokuba the keys to the KC Tower penthouse along with a request to please keep the damage to a minimum, sized up RyansGrrl and mentally gave her points for looking him in the eye and not getting flirty, deflected one last attempt on Mokuba’s part to get him to attend a Sennen concert (presumably with him & RG) and departed, ostensibly for a weekend damage control trip to the KC Honolulu office.

Let it go,
Let it happen like it happened once before.
It's a wicked wind and it chills me to the bone;

And now, standing alone in the arch, surrounded by a mass of humanity and hearing the voice of his one-time friend and lover, he could feel that wicked wind trying to wrap itself around his heart and his soul once more. Even more chilling were the words that Marik Ishtar had spoken only minutes ago:

‘In less than a week, Ryou Bakura's going through the StarGate again….He seems to think that there's nothing left holding him to planet Earth.…He needs a reason to come home …’

Author's Note, Chap. 4: Mokuba wasn't entirely sure about Hané at the Tokyo concert; at the Kyoto concert he probably did go backstage to try to talk to him, but may not have succeeded. Poor Mokuba -- he knows that Seto is miserable without Ryou, and vice versa, but can't quite bring himself to disobey his brother and spill the beans. So he tries to be devious…
