Not Just the State, but the County is Out to get Us....

#1  - On my Jury Duty summons it claimed that  we would be paid $50 compensation for our first day, $35 for any subsequent days (up to a week). During the orientation, the judge apologized; apparently after the notices went out the State legislature decided that wasn't financially possible, so knocked it down to $10 plus mileage.  Damn.  At least it was only half a day for me, and I still got the $10.

#2 - One of the *JOYS* of owning a home is County Property Taxes....which always go UP, never DOWN..... first payment of just under $600 is due June 6th.  And from somewhere I have to come with  an additional $101 for my car registration renewal by the end of this month.

#3 - Plus a trip to the dentist for teeth-cleaning/check -up  which had already been rescheduled twice due to finances; and  wouldn't you know, she found a pre-cavity that needs to be taken care of. - Guess what? NO Dental Insurance.  At least our dentist allows us to put half down and make payments on the remainder.

But, yes, I think Spring is finally here..... our flowering Crab apple tree, and the backyard cherry tree are blooming.

Is it Spring Yet?

Yesterday the temperature supposedly reached mid-seventies -- today we're back to cold winds in the forties. Which is still better than minus whatever back in February.

I need to get my act together and apply for a passport so Mom and I can tour the Canadian fall foliage in September. Am wondering if I should try to get a newer copy of my birth certificate since the one I have is threatening to fall apart at the fold lines. I DO need a photo for certain, as my driver's license photo was taken years ago when I made the mistake of trying to go blond -- lighter hair is NOT a good look on me, unless I go to a lot of trouble and get fancy with make-up (I don't have the patience) on a daily basis!

Hopefully the pending arrival of Spring will sooth the 'Must Make HATS for the Children' itch -- especially since I have at least four projects on the needles, three of which are more likely to be finished than the fourth in a timely manner: 1) a mostly grey with multi-colored accents triangular shawl, and 2) a brightly multi-colored lacey shawl -- both of these designated for the church's 'Prayer Shawl' ministry -- the brightly multi-colored yarn being a prime example of 'lovely to look at, not so lovely to work with'; and 3) a gloriously multi-colored cardigan using some of the yarn I bought at The Fold last year, which has resulted in a few difficulties in that the yarn gauge is smaller than I'm used to working with and the colors do NOT work very well when double-stranded; and I had a heck of a time finding a workable pattern for smaller- gauge needles. However, I'm almost finished with the back panel, and as mentioned previously, the colors are GLORIOUS! The plan is to have it finished by September.

(the 4th project being a pair of half-fingered gloves intended for my husband to match the Uhlan hood I made for him last fall -- except the hood was too small for him; a bit snug on me, even. So the gloves have become low-priority, especially with Spring almost here)

So..... How about those CUBS?

Spring Cleaning

Well, today my husband mowed the grass, power-washed the outside of the house with anti-fungal solution (and discovered a ding in the aluminum siding, presumably from last year's storms - will have to see about repairing), got pre-treated two by fours from Menards to replace the front porch step railings, and dug up about half the garden in preparation for planting. I did three loads of laundry, planted the front porch flower boxes (after the power-washing!) replanted some pretty blue bulby things from the back yard to the front flower bed (along with Heath's tulip, Seers' lily and M-i-L's hyacinth), made chicken quesadillas for supper, planted a row of gourmet salad greens in part of the garden plot, put pole bean seeds to soak over night(soften the skins so they sprout faster), and in a few minutes I will sign off the Internets and start putting books in bookcases in the Library room. Oh yeah, and put lotion on my hands....they're rather rough from all the cleaning and washing and planting and washing and...

Time for a bagel!!!!!
