Older Sister has had two Bad Days in a Row,

with blackouts and seizures. Friday it seemed to be connected to unusually high blood sugar, as the episodes seemed to respond to a strong dose of insulin. They (doctors and nurses) had discontinued regular insulin shots as the diabetes seemed to be under control with being in the hospital and then the nursing homes where she had controlled diet, regular meals and her prescribed medications in a timely manner. Saturday they weren't certain what was going on, they gave her shots of something (Mom doesn't remember the name of the drug) and she eventually settled in a restless sleep.

Mom thinks I should keep my phone handy. Just in case, because if Allure can't reach Mom, they'll call me.

If anyone out there can spare good thoughts for my dear sister, and strength for my Mom?

A Long Two Weeks

Ref: my Last Entry.

On top of Jethro's re-currant cancer and the hassles of trying to keep the main site clean, dry, and not licked into a bloody mess -- yes, we have a 'cone', but when Jethro wears it he can't get at his food or water, so we have elected to try other methods of keeping it protected -- none of which have proven completely effective! -- um, I digress.

Wednesday, that same week, Mom fell in the kitchen and broke her wrist, ended up in the ER and came home with a temporary cast and a referral to the Rockford orthopedic surgeon. Mom's travel buddy of many years, Thelma, passed away that day. Closer to home, the church music director missed Wednesday night handbells and choir practice that night and attempts to reach her at home, including a call to the village police department to do a welfare check were not successful. A second welfare check Thursday morning which was instigated by a neighbor and a second neighbor who had a key discovered that Charla had passed away sometime either Tuesday or Wednesday (we weren't privy to the coroner's report). The fate of Charla's elderly beagle Skippy was up in the air until late last week, when the friend of one of our members agreed to take her. Cue the scramble to find Charla's brother (northern Iowa) and sister (Georgia), and a substitute organist for Sunday worship on Jan. 29th.

I feel horrible about Mom's wrist; sad about her friend Thelma, who I've heard about for years and finally met on our trip to Michigan and Canada a few years back; devastated about Charla, who was easily my best friend at the church and my back-up advisor when it came to Presbyterians and church office details, for over 22 years.....

Like I said, a long two weeks. At least Mom got to attend Thelma's visitation last Monday (she hadn't heard yet from Rockford, so everyone told her that if they hadn't called her by 11 a.m., she should just go).... And later in the week, Younger sister took her up to the doctor where she had more x-rays, was fitted for a more flexible temporary cast and was told it looked like a 'good' break (meaning no surgery required to correct misaligned bones), and come back in a week for a better cast....

Obviously, Pastor Katie got a hold of Charla's family and the past week was spent in clearing out her home and her office at the church. We found the organist that Charla had been talking to about subbing for her later this month, he fell in love with our sanctuary organ and has stated that as long as we want him, he will play for us (we're still looking for a formal Music Director, though, because we don't know yet how well he will work with the choirs), and Charla's Prayer Shawl ministry, which was one of her passions and which I have been a part of for the past three years ... is currently in limbo. Everyone talks about how keeping it going would be a TRIBUTE to her memory, but no one wants to take charge and do the work.

Sigh. Me, I'm still learning PowerPoint, one mistake at a time. And dealing with Jethro... one long-sleeved t-shirt at a time.

So effing tired.

Not a Good Week

Last week and a half was crammed with bad news: Thanksgiving went all right, had a nice visit/meal with Husband's Aunt. I'd planned to go visit Mom on Saturday, but Riza started acting up about 20 minutes into the trip. It started with the Cruise Control suddenly conking out; I tried a couple times to reset it, but it didn't take. A little later Riza started experiencing odd jerks and surges; my immediate thought was transmission problems (I admit it, I'm paranoid about my cars' transmission systems). While I might have made it to Mom's, I didn't like the idea of driving 90 miles home in the dark under those conditions. So I pulled over at the next exit, stopped the car, turned off the engine and called both Mom and Husband to let them know I was turning around and why. I was very disappointed, because as I told Mom, 'I had a cooler full of Thanksgiving I wanted to share with her'. Oddly enough, there were NO problems during the trip back, which leads me to think (and my Goodyear mechanic to provisionally agree) that it may have been my cruise control still acting up, because I did try to re-set it several times before pulling over and turning off the engine, which would have cancelled any CC commands in the system. My mechanic advised me NOT to take any trips out of town until he could check it out, which will be this coming Wednesday.

One good thing that resulted: Husband took me to see "Ghostbusters-Afterlife" that evening to make up for my disappointment. Great movie! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cast, Director and Special Effects were all A +....

The REAL bad news starts here.

Older sister is in the hospital. Before Thanksgiving she'd finally gone in to get those odd masses in her lungs biopsied. Still don't know what they actually are, other than slightly larger than five years ago. But following the Biopsy procedure, Older Sister was in almost constant pain and occasionally coughing up blood. Mom and Younger Sister basically forced her to the doctor's office Wednesday (after she tried to cancel the follow-up visit 'because she hurt too much') and she was admitted. Several scans later, they discovered fluid not in her lungs, but in the lung cavity. The plan was to transfer her to a larger hospital where they could drain the fluid, and maybe start treatment for whatever is going on with the lungs. But, larger hospital had no beds available, so Friday local hospital did their best to drain the fluid with some success, but Older Sister is still in some pain. Mom is worried, I'm worried, Younger sister is Worried. Maybe by Monday the doctors will have some idea on how to go forward.

Thursday, we heard about college friends: Rafe, who was on the college radio station staff, bookstore frequenter, Friday night D & D player, and one of the founding members of our local SCA chapter, and his 2nd wife were apparently murdered by her adult son sometime over the Thanksgiving weekend. One of their local friends had asked the county sheriff to do a welfare check, and the bodies were discovered Wednesday. I actually was not that close to Rafe (Husband barely knew him outside the SCA), but he was one of the core members of the group I tended to hang out with in college; Bree, Emtae and Cobett had all reconnected with him over Facebook in the last five years or so and would occasionally share news with the rest of us. We had supper with Bree Friday night and reminisced about the college days; she plans to go to the services on December 18th.

From Bree we heard details about our friend Julie, who is in the hospital in St. Louis with seizures. About 10 years ago she'd had surgery to remove a tumor from an optic nerve, with the immediate result of seizures (they had to go in through her brain) and blindness. Eventually she regained vision in one eye, and the seizures were under control, and for the past five years or so she'd been doing really well. From what we were told, the doctors were trying to reduce one or more of her meds to alleviate some unwanted side effects. Poor Julie! Her husband (another college friend) has been a rock of support. It just isn't fair that they have to go through this again!

Aaannnnd, closer to home: Cobett's general health has deteriorated to the point where he is actively considering going into Assisted Living Care.

Can we start the month over??? This is too much for the beginning of December!!!

At least Jethro's ear infection has finally cleared up.... and I thought Bel was fussy about the daily ear drops!

Mid-June Musings

Well, 3/4th of the household is now fully vaccinated. BoyfriendZ is sort of dragging his heels because apparently he feels the various vaccines were 'rushed', and isn't convinced they are safe... on the other hand Daughter mentioned that they have done some preliminary investigating of available local housing options in the past couple weeks...

In the meantime, Husband and my planned visit to Aunt Marie over the July 4th weekend MAY end up being postponed, since she recently (as in 'beginning of the month') had knee surgery and may be especially susceptible to nasty viruses as a result.

Mom and I DID in fact drive down to Texas to celebrate with Youngest Sister and fam the matriculation of Da Nephew from OSU with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering -- My Nephew, the Rocket Scientist !!!! Lots of driving, followed by more driving, followed by a Ceremony, and driving, then a day of rest during which Youngest Sister took me to a local Yarn shop where Mom and I both bought skeins of locally produced yarn (my souvenir!) and Mom was mildly shocked at how expensive hand-dyed, hand-spun yarn can be.... and then a marathon drive the next day beginning around 6:30 a.m., because Mom was determined to sleep in her own bed that night. We pulled into Mom's driveway at roughly 10:30 p.m. And I drove home the next morning. It was a loooonnnggg week, but worth it. I DO wonder if the Comfort Inn in Joplin, MO ever did anything about the mold on the shower ceiling....

Whilst driving through Missouri I mentioned to Mom how I remembered when she, Dad, Older Sister and Younger Sister drove with the rented camper to California, and Dad, OS and I toured Merrimac Caverns; she'd stayed with 2 year old Yngr Sister at the campground (Yngst Sis hadn't been born yet). It was cold in the cave, and when we came out it was dark and misty. I think that might have been when OS acquired her fascination with geology and fossils which lasted well into her adulthood. We reminisced about other family vacations, which helped pass the time... Those were good years, although I don't think I'll ever live down teaching our Indiana cousins "Little Bunny Foo-foo" (and other Camp Fire Girl songs) during a Christmas trip to visit relatives in Arizona back in the '70's!

Riza needs some radiator work -- Husband thinks its the thermostat, so I've been limiting our drives to the mile and a half to work and back until I get enough of the balance paid down on both the Goodyear and the Capitol One 'Shineys'. Almost there.... maybe next week, after I get the Health Insurance paid so I can tell how much lee-way I have.

Guess that's it for now.

Half Way There!!!

Husband and I both received our first dose of the Moderna COVID vaccine last Thursday...

It is our hope that by the time Nephew graduates from OU in May, most members of the immediate family (Mom, me, Youngest Sister and Spouse, Niece, Nephew and Texas in-laws) will be fully protected, and if Mom and I drive down to Oklahoma for the festivities, there WILL BE HUGGING!!!!

WOOT!!!

There is some progress on the furnace situation (fortunately, we seem to be past the DEEP FREEZE although the Snow Demons took a parting shot over the weekend) -- we have someone coming in Thursday to give us an estimate. I am optimistic, as the company is the same one that put in/maintains the boilers at the church.

Things I Like about Riza....

1. Working gas  gauge
2. Heated front seats
3. Decent gas mileage
4. No mysterious rattles
5. Decent sized trunk

Things I'm Not so Fond of:

1. Dashboard notification of possible problems overrides the odometer display.  I'm sure there's a way to remedy this, I just haven't figured it out. Yes, I KNOW we're due for an oil change.... in about 300 more miles.  I'd prefer being able to tell when that occurs over being constantly nagged.

2. Nitrogen- filled tires.  I'm told I can have them refilled with normal air, but it will cost me.  In the meantime, I've had the 'Check Tire Pressure' notification come on every time the temperature drops below freezing.... I personally think that the nitrogen is more sensitive to air pressure/temperature, and that's why it happens, but can't seem to get a definitive answer from the mechanics.

3. The key fob.  Supposedly I had remote start as well as remote lock/unlock.  The remote start never worked for me, and the lock/unlock stopped working over the weekend.  Husband replaced the battery, but that didn't help. The plus side: I'm no longer accidentally popping the truck open.

4. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I think there might be something going on with the transmission..... I have a appointment to have an oil change, safety-check, and tires rotated next week, and I told them to take a good look at the transmission while they're at it.

5. I think the previous owner was a smoker. There's a lingering aroma.  I have a bamboo-charcoal odor absorb-er in the arm-rest pocket, which seems to help.  (the many air-freshener packets secreted in every possible cranny was a bit of a tip-off)

Other than those five things, Riza and I seem to be a good fit.

****************************
Husband is on his annual December 'use it or lose it' vacation leave.  Rather that do what I did, and sort out the manga he no longer wants and sell them to B.A.M., he's decided to rearrange the furniture and install the bookcases we couldn't find room for the first time around. This involves cleaning the computer room -- which is a plus, in one way, because I am convinced that we will find some items that went missing a while back, but in the other way, it will make huge messes everywhere else in the house!

(I'd almost rather have Daughter's ceiling collapse again....)

Mid-July....

Okay, the pile of tree branches has diminished by about half, thanks to several evenings of concentrated wood-chipping by Husband and myself.  Husband tried to rent a wood-chipper and couldn't -- apparently there are liability issues  involved -- so he ended up buying a small one from Home Depot.  Because the lowest price we were quoted by tree experts was $450.00, plus haulage fees.  Lots of wood chips lining the alley way, LOL.... and odd as it sounds, I wish that it would rain a little bit because those branches have dried out leaves and I'm a bit worried about the possibility of a fire hazard....

Father-In-Law was buried and memorialized last week.... and if I never attend another Jehovah's Witness service again, it will be too soon.

Digging through the closet last week, looking for appropriate funeral-type garb, we ran across a folder that looks like an Annuity policy F-i-L set up after Husband's mother (F-i-L's 1st wife) passed away, naming Husband, and Aunt M., (F-i-L's younger sister) as beneficiaries.... however, we don't know if it's still valid, as F-i-L remarried about 9 months later, and he may have changed it since then to favor 2nd wife instead.  Trying not to get hopes up.... if nothing else we DO have legal possession of the house.

Need to get Bel to the vet and get her shots this week.

We have an Interim Pastor, starting in August.  That will take a bit of the load off my shoulders... I hope!

I Keep Thinking that December is Further Along than it Really Is!

... Probably because of the post- Thanksgiving snow.

Wow, last week was great! Three of my long-time friends from LJ turned up suddenly; I'm sorry that the recent Tumblr problems seem to be the catalyst, but I can't help being glad. [personal profile] mister_terrific[personal profile] nenya85, and [personal profile] imagines  -- so good to see you all....  Actually, all three of you predate my LJ involvement, so that's twice we've re-connected..... It would be wonderful if more of the old crowd from Doctor Who, RGB  and YGO fandoms showed up eventually, but for now I'll count my blessings.

ETA: And [personal profile] dragondancer5150  turned up Tuesday after being MIA for about 8 months.... *waves 'Hi!'*

I spent part of this past weekend getting odd looks from passing drivers, because of the HUGE Toy Bear in Adric's back seat.  Husband and I picked him up Thursday evening at COSTCO as a 'we love you' present for a friend who has had a rough time ever since her husband passed away two years ago -- most recently undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.  The Bear pretty much stayed in the car overnight and during the day on Friday, because we really had nowhere else to stash him, although Friday night he had to come inside because Husband and I went out for supper with friends.  J's reaction when Husband gave her The Bear Saturday night --- first she laughed, almost ROTFL, then she cried a little, and then she started laughing again while Husband  had a pseudo conversation with The Bear about whether he thought we needed to buy more honey next time we shopped for groceries. That was a BIG Toy Bear; he would have been taller than Husband if he'd been standing up!  J thought he was wonderful.

As I mentioned to someone recently, I tried to clear out our manga closet not that long ago with the intention of taking the manga that we (make that 'I', because I don't dare touch Husband's collection) no longer had an interest in (mostly discontinued by American publishers, or Yaoi which I am now a bit embarrassed in that I acquired so much of it), and take the various titles in to Books A Million' s used book buyer.  This past weekend I managed to purge the rest of the shelves and hauled away three large totes and two smaller bags nearly overflowing.  The B.A.M. person took them all, including the 'Boys Love' books, which surprised me a bit.... $37 worth, which promptly went into the Christmas Shopping billfold.  I sort of wish Husband would go through HIS stacks -- at least one or two of them.... it's so tempting to say,"'He'll never miss these; probably doesn't even remember he has them", but knowing him he'd ask me 6 months from now if I 'd  seen such and such, and I've always been a lousy liar.  Better not to go there.

On the family front: Husband is currently on his annual 'Use it or Lose it' vacation time, and trying to catch up on his sleep again before January.  Daughter has been working an average of three days a week -- the company won't assign more hours because then they'd have to pay benefits to Full Time employees.... Youngest Sister and her Husband came up to Mom's for Thanksgiving because Da Niece went to her boyfriend's parents, and Da Nephew was doing the away-game marching band thing in West Virginia, I think it was.... We had a long day, because first we went up to Aunt Marie's, then swung down and around to Mom's for Supper.  Older Sister and Younger Sister were there as well, and it was generally a pretty good family visit.

On the knitting front: Currently have a cowl for Friend S, plus the second of a pair of slipper socks for Older Sister on the needles; both intended for Christmas prezzies. 3 hats, two pairs of mittens, and two pairs of socks ended up of the PW Mitten (& Socks & Hats) Tree.  I need more practice (and simpler patterns) with the socks, I think.  That second pair looked a bit odd, but hopefully it will fit someone. I have  SO  MUCH  YARN  its not funny!  And it seems like every time I try to clean, I find MORE!!!

Books: Older sister gave me a bag of books to take to the Used Book Store, and of course I went through them first.  A bunch of supernatural romances (which I'm not interested in) and volumes 1 through 6 of Naomi Novik's 'Temeraire' series (did I spell that right?) which were once described to me as "Dragonriders of Pern meet the Sharpe Saga". Well, they aren't, which is good, because that description, left me going 'meh'; they aren't too bad, actually. Another series I've discovered are by Alan Bradley  -- which I've described to others as being like "Wednesday Addams does the 'Miss Marple' thing"....

Can't really think of anything else to add right now.

Love you all!!!

Time Flies when You're Paying Bills...

Just a week until Thanksgiving -- what am I thankful for?  Mom still with us; Daughter showing an on-going interest in adult independence (if only Texas wasn't so far away!); the Goodyear credit card I qualified for back in February during the car brakes crises, which I managed to pay down by half just in time to re-spend on four badly needed tires for Adric, the Demon Malibu (still needs that gas tank sensor replaced!); the Astros beating the Dodgers; Husband NOT backing into the bicycle-riding homeless man in the dark and the Police believing Husband in the matter (between the Running out of Gas Incident, the Dog-Chomp, Vandalism at the Church, and Homeless Bicycle Man, we seem to be rapidly acquiring a 'first name' acquaintance with our local Police force.?!?) ...

Thankful that we have insurance, even though the co-pays and deductibles tripled and they want us to mail-order our medications instead of going through our local pharmacy.

Because Mom is going to Youngest Sister's in Texas over Thanksgiving -- she wants to attend an Oklahoma University home game so she can see the Nephew in the halftime marching band -- we are going up to Woodstock to have turkey, etc. with Aunt Marie.  Which kind of leaves Older Sister on her lonesome (Younger Sister will probably go to  Her S.O.'s grandmothers'), which I feel bad about, so I will probably drive over that weekend to visit her.  I do sort of wish I'd had the spare income to go to TARDIS-Con since ANIME-zing!  this year was disappointing, but it has seriously been one thing after another this year (though not nearly as bad as a few of my friends -- wish I could have done more, my 'Polly-mio!)

On the knitting front:  I found a simple sock pattern, and am knitting at least one pair for the PW Mitten, Hat and Sock tree.  No major projects since Nephew's comforter and the shawl for our church Music Director.  Two almost finished hats, one for the tree, the other for Boy Friend Z.

Books read: I have been working my way, more or less chronologically, through Elizabeth Peters' 'Amelia Peabody' series; "Arabella of Mars" by David Levine (borrowed from Older Sister); "House of Four Winds", by Mercedes Lackey & ???.

Also, manga: "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid", "The Devil is a Part-Timer", "Food Wars".

Manga on order: "Kaza Hikaru" (finally! it's been 2 years!); 'Natsume's Book of Friends" (Jan. 2018), "The Ancient Magus' Bride" (Feb. 2018).

Guess that's pretty much it for now....

Not Quite the Rainiest Summer on Record, But Close

Due to the rain during July, we have practically floated into August.... the rivers are still uncomfortably high,  but going down (very slowly).  And once again, the mosquitoes are finding little ol' me to be a tasty treat, especially when I'm trying to sleep.  I have such ghastly bite welts and what  I suspect is scratch-irritated heat rash -- I've tried aloe gel, witch hazel, calamine lotion, Absorbine Jr., generic anti-itching spray, and antihistamines.  Oh, and over the weekend at home, cold compresses. Very temporary relief with most on these; the anti-itch spray and the antihistamines have had the longest lasting effects, but I can't use them together, and I don't want to take the antihistamines too often because I don't like throwing OTC drugs into the HBP / Diabetes / High Cholesterol pharmaceutical mix too often. Any ideas that are practical to a working schedule?

Nephew's college blanket was finished, and mailed to Texas --- where it was received with much delight.  Now I have to think about birthday prezzies for the Niece.  A wall poster of the 'Game of Thrones' world was suggested....

Beldandy had her yearly trip to the vet for shots, and was discovered to have infections in BOTH ears; daily ear washes and antibiotic ear drops for the next two weeks ensued -- not much hilarity, however.  Fortunately, at the follow-up visit yesterday, she was declared 'all better' but with the recommendation that I continue cleaning the ears on a regular basis. Bel was not amused.

************************
And because I don't have FaceBook or Twitter, I'll post here:  [personal profile] apollymi  and her roommate [personal profile] katsuko  have a financial emergency due to some shenanigans involving short paychecks, the IRS and an unexpected veterinarian bill.  They have a fundraising link on www.youcaring.com/daeandkat-887919 . Thanks to my shortened work hours (and decreased pay) this year, plus almost monthly unexpected expenditures (mostly car related), my budget has been tight, so I couldn't donate as much as I wanted to, but even $10 would help.... it adds up.  So if all you can do is spread the word via FB or Twitter, that would help too.....

Wildlife in the Midwest, Part 3?

We have a tenant in the big, partially hollow tree in the backyard -- no, not Keebler elves, nor Pini elves, nor even named 'David'.  We have a Raccoon.  Which is driving Jethro crazy, especially at around 2:30 in the morning when it decides to go walk-about in the (mostly) vacant lot next door.  I've seen it a few times; so has Daughter.  Husband got to see it one evening around dusk, when, for reasons only known to the critter itself, it decided to emulate our acrobatic squirrel troop and attempt a tree-to-tree maneuver and thence to the ground before trundling its way down the sidewalk and out into the alley.  We suspect that due to the tons of rain during the latter half of May, the varmint was flooded out of its usual habitat (we are approximately 1/2 mile from the river, as the crow flies/raccoon trundles).... the real question is whether or not we have a SingleRaccoonMale, or an ExpectantRaccoonFemale -- it being that time of year.....  Hopefully, SRM will return to its usual foraging grounds once the water goes down;  ERF, on the other hand..... well, we had a Mama Possum a few years ago that we only discovered once the babies were mobile enough to crawl out of the tree, not to mention the rabbits which persist in digging their baby bunny burrows within tie-out reach of the mudroom porch....

In the meantime, we are being careful about putting Bel or Jethro outside after dark.  Bel has always been pretty chill with wildlife antics -- she'll watch from the porch.  Jethro, on the other hand, raises the roof....and has to be restrained from dashing down the stairs.

Over the past weekend, my Jazz-loving,  mathematical genius of  a nephew graduated from high school; Mom flew down to Texas for the festivities.  Nephew -- National Merit Scholar that he is -- has already been accepted by the University of Oklahoma, AND has a slot in the university marching band!!!  I am about a third of the way finished knitting an afghan in school colors (crimson and cream) for his dorm room, and will really have to double-down for the next few weeks.

Also over the weekend, we accomplished some house-cleaning and bad weed removal in the butterfly garden.  I think this year we will forego the usually futile attempts at a vegetable garden.  I pulled 'bad' weeds, and cleared areas for more of the desirables (Milkweed, Joe Pye Weed, Butterfly Weed, etc.) Looking to expand into Hummingbird-friendly plants as well.

Also trying to find the type of Sage plant that I had up at the trailer -- the one with the gorgeous silver-white flowers.... the thing is, I'm pretty sure that it was an ordinary culinary sage variety, picked up at random at a local garden shop.... but!  The closest I can find anywhere is either "White Sage", which is considered a desert climate variety (not suitable for Midwest growing) and reportedly has light purple flowers, or "Bee Sage", which does have white flowers, but not only looks nothing like my plant but is not suitable for cooking use.  Considering that the original purpose of the plant was  for cooking, I'm starting to wonder if my lovely little plant was a mutant....  Oh, how I wish I'd thought to take a cutting or even dig up the plant during the spring after the move but before the trailer sold!!!    **sigh**

On the Knitting Front: finished the 'Waves and Scallops' shawl, and gave it to our church's Music Director who went in for knee replacement surgery the week before Memorial Day.  She is also the organizer of the Prayer Shawl ministry -- my thought was:she's always making shawls to give to other people, she should receive one too.   As mentioned earlier, am now in a frenzy working on school afghan for the Nephew.  All other knitting is now on hold.

Books read:  Um. Too busy knitting.

Birthday Shout-Out to my One and Only Moffett (aka "Reziac")!!!

Thinking about my Dad...

Yesterday was Dad's birthday -- he would have been 88.

Back in November, before Thanksgiving, I'd been looking for a small flag with a CUBs logo; we were planning a trip north to visit Husband's aunt, and I thought if I could find a CUBS flag we could stop by the cemetery and I'd put it in the flower holder by his marker. Just a small flag, about the size of the American flags that get placed by veterans' graves on Memorial Day -- but I couldn't find any. Since we were headed up to the suburbs, I figured it would be fairly easy to find suitable CUBs memorabilia...
No such luck. We went to a specialty store, and I asked; apparently, the small flags that I was thinking about were temporarily out of production.... but the store owner mentioned that a LOT of people were buying CUBs World Series decals and putting THOSE on headstones of their departeds. So I picked up a couple of the decals, and we headed south on Sunday. On the way, I started thinking... and when we got to the cemetery, we placed the decal on Dad's marker without removing the backing and took a picture so we could show Mom what it looked like. Then we headed to Mom's house, gave her the decal and showed her the picture, and left the decision up to her -- she thought it was an excellent idea, but better to wait for Spring. So we visited and discussed plans for Thanksgiving, etc.

Anyway, last night I was clearing the end table in the living room and found about a dozen photos from I'm pretty sure the summer of 2007 that had Dad (and Mom) in them. He looked good; he was independently mobile (might have had a cane, though I don't remember one), smiling and his normal easy-going self and I remember he was still able to drive at that point -- he hadn't suffered any of the micro-strokes yet -- and I started tearing up, because Dad in 2007 would have been over the moon about the CUBs, and why couldn't they have won in 2007 when he'd still been with us, and able to appreciate it?

I miss Dad. I'm tearing up now, just writing about it.

My Dad

My Dad passed away this morning.  He'd had a minor stroke three weeks ago and was first in hospital then a nursing home for care and physical therapy. Mom was a bit concerned, because he was not responding and coming back as well as he has in the past..Because of the horrid weather and an nasty cold on my part,  I hadn't been able to visit since ???  Then mid-last week, Dad developed pneumonia and was back in the hospital.  Last Sunday,  (two days ago) I figured I was mostly over the cold and not likely to infect Dad, so I drove out for a visit.  I'm glad I did --

Mom called this morning a bit after 6 a.m. -- She said I didn't need to come out -- my youngest sister is with her, and the other two are close by.
But Pastor Joyce said they can manage without me for a few days, so I think I will go this afternoon (90 minute drive) and stay the night.  Dad will be cremated, and a service later when the weather is better.

For years our family had a joke about Dad's birthday blizzard (end of January); in fact, it was because of the Birthday Blizzard that I met my future husband (couldn't  make it home from college that weekend) -- it figures that it would snow the night before....

I wish I had a stronger faith in a Supreme Creator Being -- it would be such a comfort right now....

More of the Same - July, August, September

I keep forgetting to check my DW account for posts, which I really shouldn't because there ARE a few of my friends who only post here/there these days....sorry, will try to follow the plot a little better....

Not a whole lot happened during July -- Bel was upset with me most of the month due to the twice-a-week anti-arthritis treatments PLUS two weeks of ear-drops and pills to clear up a nasty ear infection -- Daughter got to make use of the animal restraint training from her Veterinarian Assistance class. Jethro was a bit of a nuisance, as he kept trying to nibble/lick said infected ear.

My elder sister *Oddyssia* came to visit the first weekend of August, and we spent lots of time & some money at the used bookstores... She brought along several shopping bags of books to trade, and ended the weekend with a hefty credit at The Book Rack. I spent a bit much on books myself -- a couple of sf-fantasy books, manga, etc. Visited Popcorn Charlie's and hooked Big Sister on their Black Licorice and French Vanilla flavors. Watched a good chunk of DW S6 together and SH:Game of Shadows. Good times.

September. No one I've talked to can remember the Indian Summer Festival/Labor Day Parade being rained out before, but thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Isaac it happened this year. Sadly, it seemed appropriate since the church's beloved Vacation Bible School director Jane passed away August 30th. The brain tumor turned out to be inoperable, and chemo really didn't do much. She was such a cheerful, out-going energetic person, barely 60....

Sigh.

Someone told me the other day that 55 is the new 'Middle Age' ('Old' is 75, apparently)-- does that mean it's time for my Mid-Life Crisis?

*contemplates the 'Stars' tattoo design*

Nope, still not keen on pain....

Happy Shared Birthday, Youngest Sister!

'Allo.... Hope No One's Been Worried.....

The first week of June was busy and worrisome, due to Husband's unexpected visit and overnight stay in the hospital. See, back in December, Husband's Diabetes doctor retired, and so he was recommended to another local doctor. Mid-May the new doctor had Husband do a lot of tests and stuff, basically so she could get a feel for his condition, including EKG and Stress Test... something didn't quite look right with the results so she referred him to a heart specialist (also changed his medications a bit).

On June 2nd he saw the specialist who did whatever it is specialists do (special x-rays, etc.) and um, two of the secondary arteries in his heart were blocked or partially blocked. Doctor said, "let's schedule an angiogram for later this month; see what's going on, clear out the build-up if we need to.... oh, just had a cancellation, how about tomorrow (aka Friday)?"

Long story short, Husband ended up spending the night at Trinity West with two freshly angioplasted arteries, one with a stent. Apparently there was a section of artery that was like those long balloons all big and full at the ends, with a small pinched bit in the middle.

Well, as Husband (and Father-in-Law) pointed out, better to catch it now when there's time to fix it than be rudely surprised in a year or so with a heart attack! It was a hectic 48 hours, though not as bad as the Broken Hip incident. So Husband's got more, new medications to take and is on 'Light Work' duties 'til the end of the month (Though he's STILL working 10-Hour shifts at the plant...grumble grumble -- I KNOW, be grateful he's working....).

Anyway, between Hospital and Dentist, it's been a bit Hectic. PLus my Boss is getting ready for the annual Mission Trip to South Dakota, which means lots of working ahead and making sure all the bases are covered for the next two weeks.... "Tired" doesn't cover it. I went home last night, tossed frozen Dinners in the microwave for Husband and Daughter and went to bed. Friday is my Parent's 60th Anniversary; Youngest Sister and family are going to be in town, so the plan is to meet Sunday for noon dinner... If I hadn't already paid my money, I'd seriously be tempted to skip AnimaZING!Con this weekend.

Hopefully I'll get to see oddyssia this weekend; she said she had more of that lovely TARDIS-blue yarn, which means if I get my act together maybe I can make the cute TARDIS cell-phone cover that was posted over on novice_knitters.livejournal. Only problem, the pattern is 'in the round', which means I have to gird my loins and hazard the DP needles again, or figure out how to knit it 'flat'.

Starting to run out of new books to read. Would go buy more, but have to pay the Bills first. bleh.

Easter Flowers 2009

I'm quite pleased this year -- I ordered one each: white lily, yellow tulip, pink hyacinth, and purple hyacinth and that's what I got -- well, the tulip was actually orange & red streaked, but since it was for Heath that worked out nicely. I took pictures of the plants and will try to post once I get the cd back from the developer.

The White Lily was for seers atemu (Tish), her fiancee Josh, and Baby seers.

The Tulip was for Heath.

The Pink Hyacinth was for my paternal and maternal grandparents, my paternal aunt in Indiana, and my paternal uncle in Texas (no, dear BBM friends, his name was *not* Jack Twist).

The Purple Hyacinth was for my husband's mother, and his half-brother.

**************

I gave the Pink Hyacinth to my folks yesterday when daughter and I went out to visit (husband stayed home and fixed my car brakes). Daughter has a migraine today, and I have a call into Dr. Cullen because the preventative doesn't seem to be working very well. Poor kid.

-- Boy am I glad I ordered 'Zero' through DreamSpinner Press and not amazon!!! Now, if it would just get here!!!!

(no subject)

Mother's Day weekend was bittersweet. The sweet consisted of being reminded that it had been one year since bringing Belldandy home, receiving a rosebush from husband and child, and spending most of that day with MY mother (and father and daughter). The bitter? Going with my husband to the cemetery the day before to visit the grave-sites of HIS mother and half-brother, and learning that My Dad has prostate cancer. Yes, I know that Prostate cancer is one of the more easily treated and survivable of the lot.... but my dad is 77, has diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems.

Daughter is having boy problems again.... it's complicated. For a while she and the Out-of-State Scumsucker from the January/February soap opera tried to patch things up, his mother got into the act and offered to pay for Daughter to fly out there and go to OoSSs' high school Prom, but that fell through... then one of her 'friends-who-happens-to-be-a-boy' from Anime Club started liking Daughter... a LOT. Poor kid was almost crying on my shoulder, 'cause she DOES like him, as a friend; wants to keep him as a friend, doesn't want to give him false hope; and now he's asked her to double date with another couple from Anime CLUB to OUR prom. I can sympathize; I went through something similar my Junior year in college, during which it seemed like every time I turned around one of my male classmates whom I considered a friend was professing an interest in 'getting closer'...

Well, enough angst. My right foot, badly sprained just before Easter, seems to be healing properly, although not yet up to par. Still limping a bit, especially when tired, and it aches at odd intervals. The doctor told me it generally takes 4-6 weeks, and I know I've pushed it a bit.

There's a fanfic fandom meme making the rounds: Choose a character from the posted list of fandoms, and I'll tell you three things about him/her/it from my personal fanon/fanfiction. I've hesitated because I've written so little, in only a few fandoms, and I'm not sure if anything I come up with will make ANY sense, especially since I tend to blend my fanons in weird ways (multi-fandom crossovers, anyone?) But.....

Here goes: Real Ghostbusters
AirWolf
Highlander
StarGate SG:1
Yu-Gi-Oh! (not GX)
Brokeback Mountain
