What Makes a House a Home?
Jan. 12th, 2008 12:00 amIs it the feel of familiar, as gradually stuff accumulates and creates the comfort zone? or is it something more intangible? Two years ago after Orion passed over the bridge, we were convinced that something totally vital to "home" had disappeared with him....and eventually tried to recreate it with Bel....
At the risk of sounding sentimental, I think it might be LOVE that makes a house into a home. My in-laws loved each other and lived in this house together for 50+ years; raised two boys into manhood, ran a successful Health-Supplement mail-order business, entertained friends and family on countless occasions and baby-sat grand-daughters in this house. It's a GOOD house that has been too quiet and lonely for the past year and a half (longer, actually, including the months Thelma was ill).My husband says the house *needs* us and that we can help it become a Home again; I think he's right, but it will take some time. It's starting to feel comfortable to be here on weekends and in the evenings... during the next two weeks we will make the push towards total occupancy; the current 'half and half' arrangement is exhausting, both physically and emotionally!
Yesterday Husband was cleared by his doctor to go back to work on the 21st... the borrowed walker has been returned to Joe and Elinor with many MANY thanks, and the staghorn swordcane (relic of our SCA days!)has abruptly become useful! Many thanks also my LJ friends for your concern and good wishes! BIG HUGS!
