The Shadow at Your Door, Chapter 3
A Yu-gi-oh!/Stargate SG-1 fanfiction story
By not_hathor, aka MotherCHOWGoddess

Rating/Warning: 'OT' for swearing, suggestive language, and male/male relationships (Shonen-Ai, yaoi, SKxRB). Character deaths mentioned, but not shown. Spoilers for the end of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series and for StarGate SG-1 season 7.

Disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh! Or any of the characters thereof. They belong to Kazuki Takahashi/ Shueisha Inc., FUNImation Productions, 4Kids, etc. Likewise, I do not own Stargate: SG1 or any of those characters. They belong to MGM, Double Top Secret Productions, Gekko, the SciFi Channel and a whole bunch of suits. This piece of fiction was written solely for the enjoyment of myself and fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! and StarGate fans , and no profit is being made by its writing or publication. The song 'Shadows' was written, performed & produced by Canadian folk singer Gordon Lightfoot; the lyrics of the second verse have been altered slightly to better fit the characters and the plot.

2nd Warning: This is a 'song-fic', a 'band fic' (sort of) and a Cross-Over (sort-of) set in an AU in which the anime/manga series Yu-Gi-Oh! and the live action TV series 'StarGate:SG-1' share the same reality. If any of these are immediate turn-offs for you, please feel free to stop reading NOW. The original version of this story that was posted on FanFiction.net did NOT include a Lemon scene between Seto and Ryou. It will be clearly marked (hidden in a Cut) so that sensitive readers can avoid it if they wish. Although it uses some of the ideas from my 'Weight of a Feather' stories, I don't think it's necessary to have read them to appreciate this one. Thank you.

Author's Note: Six improbable things you will need to know to better understand this story: 1) It is definitely Shonen-Ai & yaoi,). 2) It is definitely AU, set after end of the Yugioh manga/anime series, and between the episode "Heroes" and the season finale of SG-1's season Seven. 3) It is commonly believed in the context of this fanfic that the Spirit of the Sennen Ring, aka Yami Bakura, aka the Tomb Robber, no longer exists although Ryou retains certain characteristics & attitudes (especially when he loses his temper); ditto for Marik/Malik. 4) Several of the supporting characters were 'borrowed' from other anime/fandoms -- see later A/N for ID's. 5) For the main story, the following ages apply: Seto is 25 - Ryou is 24 - Mokuba is 19 and in college. 6) It's my presumption that frequent use of or exposure to the Sennen Items results in an increased sensitivity to the presence of magic and limited access to any lingering residue of mystical energies.

Softly, over the hushed murmurs of the crowd and the music of strings and synthesizer, the gentle voice of Hané could be heard. Not singing yet, but speaking quietly and every word fell like 'Rain of Mercy' onto one listener's soul.

"Some years back, a group of young people had an incredible adventure, one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the kind that haunts you for years to come. Some became friends, some enemies; others, allies in need and even lovers. Lives were saved, lives were lost; promises made and broken. Words were spoken that should have never been said. Others that should have, went unspoken. None of us who returned home… were unchanged.

"A few of us stand now on the edge of another great adventure; and it's past time, if ears are listening, for those words to be heard….."

Let me reach out, love, and touch you,
Let me hold you for a while.
I've been all around the world --
Oh how I long to see your smile!

The tall CEO leaned against the wall of the archway, unseen and anonymous, as he had every night of Sennen's Domino City gig, drinking in the sight and sound of the one person other than his brother Mokuba to claim a piece of his tightly shielded, twice-shattered heart. Three nights of listening with ears and heart, as the desperate longing he could hear in that sweet tenor voice chipped away at a lifetime's habit of icy detachment. For so long in his world, emotion had been a weakness to be exploited in others and never revealed in oneself; friendship was a fool's delusion. And yet…..

There's a shadow on the moon,
And the waters here below
Do not shine the way they should --
And I love you just in case you didn't know.

If you loved me, why did you leave? Didn't you know, didn't you care how much I needed you? How could you, though? I never told you, could never admit it. Even to you, especially to you.

Let it go,
Let it happen like it happened once before….
It's a wicked wind and it chills me to the bone;
And if you do not believe me
Come and gaze upon the shadow at your door.

I believe you; how can I not? I don't know if I can survive losing you again, my heart. The first time you went through the StarGate, I didn't know that's what it was -- I thought you'd died; I couldn't feel you anymore! I damn near sent a hit squad after Daniel Jackson, because you were supposedly with him; it was his responsibility to keep you safe in that foreign place. And then -- you were back! I didn't know how, I didn't care how. It was enough to see your startled expression when I stormed through the security check at the Mountain, to hear your voice calling my name, and feel your heart beating against mine as you threw propriety to the winds and embraced me in front of God, the Air Force Colonel trying to arrest me, and everyone.

I was afraid, Ryou. Me, Seto Kaiba, the fearless Champion Duelist and ruthless CEO of Kaiba Corp. And each time after that, when you went back to Cheyenne Mountain, to Daniel Jackson and the StarGate, the fear got stronger: That I would lose you to the stars and never get you back. Then Dr. Jackson died, and I knew… I knew that you would go and that I couldn't stop you; so I protected myself the only way I knew how. I pushed you away.

*************

Won't you listen to me, darlin',
Hold my heart inside your hands?
I've been halfway to the stars,
And I still don't understand;

"Why are you so uptight about this, Seth? It didn't bother you half as much the first time I went to Colorado…." Seto watched stone-faced and silent behind his desk as his dearest friend and sometime lover paced around the CEO's office in uncharacteristic agitation. "They need me -- how many people can you name offhand who can read, write and speak pre-Dynastic Egyptian? I can only come up with five, maybe six -- and three of those people are dead!"

"My sympathies regarding Dr. Jackson…" He kept his voice flat, trying to avoid any hint of either sympathy or malice, but apparently he failed on the latter because Ryou turned on him, eyes flashing with fury and grief.

"Don't be a hypocrite! I think you 're actually glad he's dead, because you think that makes my promise to Daniel-san -- what's that legal phrase again? -- null and void. Well, let me tell you something, Kaiba, it doesn't. Not to me! It means that without Daniel-san, the SGC needs my experience, my knowledge of Ancient Egyptian culture and society more than ever."

Seto flinched ever so slightly at the other's use of his surname; the silvery-haired youth knew how much he despised it, but apparently the normally sensitive Ryou was beyond caring about his feelings at the moment. Which Seto most certainly deserved, especially since he had felt a twinge of satisfaction in learning that the too-likeable archaeologist (whom Fate and Ryou's benevolently neglectful and late father had designated as the boy's legal guardian several years ago) was no longer capable of luring his aibou through that Ra-damned StarGate. Unfortunately Ryou's highly inconvenient sense of duty, honor and obligation was still alive and kicking.

"What the hell did you think I was planning to do with my anthropology degree, Seth? Be a consultant for one of your VR games? I'm not a child anymore; I've been a legal adult for nearly five months. If I needed anyone's permission it would be Daniel-san's, not yours."

"Then why are you here?"

Was it you or was it me,
Or the shadow of a dream?

"To tell the truth, I'm not sure anymore. I thought you'd understand."

"I understand, all right," Seto sneered in as cutting a tone as he could manage. "Off to save the world again from ancient evils. I'm surprised you're wasting time on me and not out enlisting the aid of the Yuugi-tachi -- what's left of it." As the color drained from Ryou's face in shock at the deliberate cruelty of his comment, the Kaiba Corp. executive turned his chair away, adding dismissively, "Do me one favor, Bakura. Try to leave Mokuba out of it this time."

"Don't. You. Dare."

With a strength he'd never realized the other youth possessed, Ryou reached across the desk and grabbed the back of Seto's chair, turning it around again and forcing him back into the confrontation. Generally speaking, Ryou so rarely lost his temper it was almost frightening when he did so: his normally dark chocolate eyes flashed with amber lights that left his irises resembling tiger-eye gemstones in both color and density. It was the most noticeable remnant of Ryou's 'Other', but not the only one.

"Don't you dare make this about Mokuba!" Bakura growled. Oh, yes, definitely more than a trace of the Tomb Robber survived. "Or Jounouchi! You know the Goa'uld are real. This isn't a game; it isn't about some stupid championship title or your pride this time. It's bigger than you or me or those petty little corporate squabbles you pretend are so important, and if you can't see that…."

He let go of the chair and stepped back, the expression on his face one that Seto had never wanted to see again on his friend: hurt, angry….betrayed. The brunette steeled himself against the words he knew would follow, unable to stop them, unable to even try -- like being forced to watch the rerun of an old tragic movie.

Is it wrong to need your love?
Have I lost the finest love that's ever been?

"If you can't see that, Seto Kaiba, then you are not the man I thought you were."

Only a spirit or a psychic could have heard in that moment of silence the sound of two hearts breaking.

"You're not the man I fell in love with."
****************

Set it free,
It could happen like it happened once before.

After walking out the door of Kaiba's office, Bakura hadn't wasted any time burning his bridges. He'd quickly arranged to have the credits already acquired for his Master's degree transferred to a university in America, and departed for Colorado a week later. When a clueless Mokuba had asked his brother why Ryou was leaving, Kaiba had angrily ordered the younger boy never to speak that name in his presence again. For fifteen months the brunette had stubbornly resisted checking on his former lover, until the night it happened again: that horrible wrenching emptiness that woke him from a sound sleep, screaming Ryou's name.

The remainder of that night and much of the next morning had been spent desperately hacking university records and the USAF computers for any trace of Bakura, Ryou. He'd found the early bestowment of a Master's of Science degree in Comparative Anthropology from the University of Colorado and a Change of Address form for the AFO base near Colorado Springs, and was on the verge of declaring the cyberspace equivalent of war on the United States when the world suddenly twisted rightside-in again and he knew that Ryou was still alive, if not entirely well.

It's a wicked wind and it chills me to the bone;
And if you do not believe me
Come and gaze upon the shadow at your door.

Seto had experienced a brief glimmer of hope upon discovering that Dr. Jackson was miraculously back from the dead, an occurrence which only slightly boggled the mind of one who'd dealt with ancient prophecies, reincarnated tomb robbers, resurrected Egyptian pharaohs, and come - however reluctantly - to accept the notion that he himself was the present-day incarnation of a High Priest/Sorcerer of the Old Kingdom. If Daniel Jackson had indeed returned from the grave, then perhaps…. But stubborn pride had prevented him from making the first overture, and Ryou apparently had no interest in the recent past.

And why should he? A cynical Kaiba had asked himself. He'd got his precious Daniel-san back. And if he'd read those files correctly, another old 'friend' had recently been hired as a civilian consultant at the base: one Marik Ishtar, fresh from the University of Cairo, Egypt. A call to the director of the Cairo Office of Antiquities had confirmed that yes, Ishizu's younger brother was doing post-graduate studies in America, but she refused to reveal where. Kaiba had growled a barely polite 'thank you' before slamming down the phone. Ryou's 'Other' and the Egyptian Tomb Keeper had come close to causing The End of the World as We Know It with their 'partnership' during the Battle City Tournament, although to be fair, it had been Marik's 'Other' making most of the trouble. Well, if Ryou preferred to keep company with that former megalomaniac, fine. In a fit of pique, Kaiba had cancelled his Search Engine flags and did his best to pretend that he'd never held an interest in Egyptian scholars and graduate students who were mysteriously working for the U.S.A.F.

Until the first batch of concert tickets arrived in the mail one morning three weeks ago.

Author's Notes, Ch. 3: The flashback scene in Seto's office occurs shortly after Daniel's 'death' near the end of StarGate's season Five; Seto is 22, Ryou is 21. The 'Seth' nickname is a hold-over from the Tomb Robber's memories. Although Seto & Ryou have had a sexual relationship and do think of each other as 'lover', it is more spiritual/emotional than physical; best friends and soul mates with 'benefits'.
The bit about the Yuugi-tachi and Jounouchi during Ryou and Seto's argument: over the years (in the manga and the anime) the -tachi have been in some pretty dangerous situations, and I felt it only reasonable that there would have been at least one casualty. Why Jou? Because he's the one most likely to throw himself into the line of fire, especially if it was to protect Yuugi or his sister Shizuka. So, for this story, it's R.I.P. Jounouchi Katsuya.
The first time Ryou went through the Stargate was unintentional; he got kidnapped by a rogue NID team, and keeled over from the shock of Gate travel -- and as implied, Seto 'felt' it and went ballistic. The second time was at the end of season six/ beginning of season Seven.
