So it's past time for resolutions. Pretty much the same as last year:

1. Actively pursue good health. Thursday I had my Annual Physical, and while the labs weren't back yet so I don't have an A1c reading, Dr. seemed pleased with my almost normal Blood Pressure and slight weight loss, as well as my respiration. Got a flu shot. Told her I'd added cinnamon and chromium picolinate as well as CoQ10 to my daily pills; she approved and suggested more calcium and Vitamin D as well. We are trying to avoid going back to the ridiculously expensive diabetes drug. I have drastically reduced the amount of diet soda I drink and am trying to incorporate more fresh vegetables.

2.Practice patience, particularly with family members.

3.Stay in touch with friends and family. Reach out to my on-line friends more often.

4.Work on my fan-fiction. Seeing "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" 'jossed' the story line for my RGB/The Shadow story, but I plan to continue and call it an Alternate Universe. Also my Yu-Gi-Oh stories need to come out of limbo.

And now: Some not so good stuff.

1. My Older Sister, who I love dearly (even when she is exasperating) and has been my best friend for most of my life, has lung cancer. It's a type that tends to target non-smokers, and thanks to the COVID shut down on non-emergency procedures for the past two years, it had the opportunity to spread. Older Sis started chemo just before Christmas -- not a cure, but it could buy her some time -- and so far she's been handling it well. She has stated that she is NOT 'going quietly into that good night'...

2. We are fairly certain that Jethro has lost his hearing, probably due to that nasty ear infection back in November. Pets, children and spouses are all notorious for 'selective hearing', but its been pretty obvious for the past month that Jethro just isn't hearing us. Poor silly half Chow... we have to be patient and give him extra love and attention.

Work has been crazy, what with the holidays and the January madness that is the ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING (next Sunday), plus we've had our share of the latest COVID surge in the area. Husband's co-workers are still idiots, and proud of it ("why should I get the vaccine? I've had COVID; I'm immune now, right?"). *Sigh*

At least our new furnace works! Yays!

Y'know what would really make my month? If Publisher's Clearing House stopped being a tease and actually gave me that $10,000 check on the 31st....

Was hoping the weather-watchers were blowing smoke when they predicted snow over last night and into today, but Noooooo! They were right, darn it.... at least we got most of the errands done last night right after supper -- groceries, prescription drop-offs (won't need until Tuesday), new blood-sugar test meter -- had my 3-month Diabetic check-in earlier this week and Doctor scolded me -- need to keep a closer eye on the blood sugar -- oh, and losing  around 40 lbs would be good..... *sigh*  Well, least I won't develop gall stones this time if I do (gall bladder came out in 1999 -- after losing some 40+ pounds a couple of years previous!).

Daughter has the day off today (good thing!); I'm doing laundry and web-surfing (obviously).  Oh, and cleaning house, as Mom and Elder Sister are supposed to come for Thanksgiving.

After re-reading some of LucidScreamer's  YGO drabbles, I was struck by a cosplay idea: a Victorian/Edwardian-era fem-Ryou Bakura.  I've even roughed out a bit of back story, though I'm fuzzy on how to explain the half-Japanese part at that point in history.  Also need an Anglo-cized first name for Ryou...  handwaving on the Japanese Egyptologist father.  Basically,  Daddy Bakura sends daughter Ryou a package from Egypt containing The Ring and some cryptic notes about his recent discoveries in  the general vicinity of Giza.  Ryou does NOT don the Ring (seriously, heavy clunky TACKY!!!), but keeps it close because, GOLD and VALUABLE and MYSTERY....  about half a year later, when Daddy is expected to return to England, another package arrives with Daddy's journal and a note from expedition partners Professor Hawkins and Mouto with condolences -- Daddy Bakura is missing/presumed dead.....

So, 17 yr old Ryou decides to 'chaperone'  younger classmate Rebecca Hawkins'  trip to join her grandfather in Egypt....  Since Ryou is not wearing the Ring, she's not possessed -- but keeping it close results in a bit of bleed-over influence.  Right now, I'm trying to settle on an Ancient Egyptian Thief King- influenced outfit that's still within the strictures of Victorian/Edwardian fashion.  Thinking bright red dress jacket over white blouse and blue riding skirt, utility belt w/pouch for the Ring, boots..... need to find a pattern for the riding skirt.  The Pyramid Collection has some nice steampunk-ish accessories, including a leather-bound blank book (with lapis decorated buckle!) that would be perfect for Daddy Bakura's journal -- but so expensive!!!   Sigh.

Well, it's not like I'm in a hurry and need COSPLAY NOW! for an anime convention in the near future....

Later!

Am slightly miffed because the adorable little microwave potholders left over from the Bazaar (end of October)sold before I could free up the money to buy them myself. They would have made cute stocking stuffers.

My elder sister [livejournal.com profile] oddyssia's husband died suddenly the weekend before Thanksgiving -- heart attack/stroke. He was a large man, with health problems and older than Elder Sis, but as she said, she always thought they'd have more time together. She and Mike had been very active in the Society for Creative Anachronisms' northern Illinois chapters many years ago, as well as local anime societies in the Chicago area holding. He liked to collect odd collectible card games and sets, read voraciously (science fiction, fantasy, cyberpunk, mysteries, detective/noir, political thrillers, historical fiction), enjoyed word puzzles and cross-stitch embroidery, and collected railroad paraphernalia. Mike could be a difficult person to be around, but [livejournal.com profile] oddyssia loved him. They were married for slightly over 33 years.

*HUGS my SISTER*

Over Thanksgiving weekend, the church e-mail was hacked. The Rotten Blighters sent out spam message about how I was stranded in Edinburgh, Scotland sans passport, luggage or money and needed help in getting home! No sooner did we have THAT straightened out (lost the church's e-mail address book and all the saved e-mails!) when the same RBs hacked pastor's personal e-mail.... We laugh about it now, but it was a real pain at the time!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dragondancer515's post about the horrible quality control issues that PURINA has had lately, we have switched dog foods (not that we'd seen anything "off" with the Fit & Trim, but since the bag was almost empty anyway....). Finicky Chows apparently like the taste of BLUE Buffalo's Chicken & Brown Rice formula, plus it's 100% made in America (whoa! 'Bandit Keith' flashback from YGO Abridged!)

I keep thinking that it's further along in the month than it is -- except it really is -- only two weeks until Christmas!!!!

I really must tend to my knitting - who knows what trouble it may get into without me!
